In Dubious Battle is a screen adaptation of the eponymous novel by John Steinbeck.
1930 is the critical moment in US history. Severe economic crisis has put millions of people in conditions of constant struggle for survival. The ghost of communism has never been so great and powerful in America. The authorities are concerned seriously about growing of the red threat and show attention to one of the leaders of the “Party” Jim, who is very active among the workers movement.
Jim is in California and falls into the very epicenter of the confrontation of migrant workers, employed in harvesting of apples, and local landowners, who paid a tiny fraction of the promised wages to working people. However, Jim convinces his blood brothers that they should fight for their rights. 900 persons are combined into a strong, powerful and frightening troop. A major clash coming. A blood will spilled soon that activist Jim Nolan wants to sacrifice the Idea. He does not yet realize that their entire struggle, their movement is doomed, and is held under the motto In Dubious Battle…
